Open-water swimming enthusiasts can rejoice, as the much-anticipated sessions at Bristol Harbour are back. From June 29 to October 19, 2024, swimmers will have the opportunity to enjoy the unique experience of swimming in the heart of Bristol. These sessions, managed by All-Aboard Water Sports in partnership with Bristol City Council, promise a safe and exhilarating experience for all participants.

What to Expect at Bristol Harbour Swimming Sessions
Participants can look forward to a well-organized and safe environment, designed to ensure everyone can enjoy their swim to the fullest. The swimming area is cordoned off, with buoys marking a 200m course, providing a secure space for both experienced swimmers and those looking to try open water swimming for the first time. To participate, swimmers must be 18 years or older and capable of swimming at least 200m continuously in deep water. Each session costs £7.00, and bookings must be made in advance. After booking, you’ll receive a waiver to complete, ensuring all safety protocols are understood and agreed upon.
Safety First
Safety is a top priority at these sessions. Swimmers are required to bring and wear a tow float and a brightly colored swim cap—both available for purchase at the session if needed. These items ensure visibility in the water, keeping swimmers safe and easily identifiable by lifeguards and safety boats on duty. Additionally, swimmers are encouraged to wear earplugs to prevent cold water from entering the ear canal, which can cause discomfort.
Weekly water quality tests will be conducted to ensure the harbour meets bathing water standards. Lifeguards and safety boats will be present during all sessions, and swimmers must stay within the designated area. Entry into the water stops at 9:40am, and swimmers must check in at the designated desk before entering the water.
How to Get There and What to Bring?
The swimming sessions take place at Baltic Wharf, easily accessible from All-Aboard Water Sports. Participants should bring warm clothes for after their swim, as well as any necessary swim gear. Supervised storage is available for personal belongings.
Swimmers can also enjoy the facilities at Underfall Yard, including toilets, showers, and the Underfall Café, which will be open early to serve hot drinks and snacks during the sessions.
Looking Ahead
This summer’s sessions are not just a one-off event. The data collected during these sessions will help Bristol City Council determine the viability of offering open water swimming on a regular basis in the future. If successful, more inclusive and accessible options may be introduced, including sessions for children and less experienced swimmers, as well as free or affordable swims for those who need them.
